dry mouth

Question:
Hi guys,
My mother had a today {she's 67!} and is doing well, but she's having severe DRY MOUTH from all the meds.. Gave her popsicles, water, etc... still bothersome. I don't remember having dry mouth after my tummy tuck. Anyone have any suggestions or anything? Thanks.
Staci
ps, we both chuckled when i told her the dry mouth is there to distract from the discomfort from the tummy!
Answer:

Some hard candies, like butterscotch, or cough drops if she's coughing and might due to the dry mouth.
Answer:

StaciB, on the streets that's called a "Hot Box" So tell Mom she's got a Hot Box, and all she can do is drink plenty of fluids until she replenishes all the fluids she lost during surgery. It took me 16 bottles of water my first 20 hours out of surgery to cure my Hot Box. Then I was on the stool peeing Forever!
Answer:

Lemon drops did the trick for me.

Tell your mom hi for us and to feel better soon!
Answer:

I am almost 10 days PO and I'd say I had the same kind of dry mouth (off and on) for the first week, then it just went away. (I am also drinking a *lot* of water...Like 90-100 ounces/day) I also had a couple days when I'd get a "tickle" that would make me want to cough. I started carrying around those Listerine menthol breath strips for an immediate "coughing fit" fix. Works like a charm and sure beats the bellyache that follows coughing!

Hope that helps a little.

best wishes!

Answer:

Staci,

I forgot to mention that if your Mom just had her then her throat/mouth irritation may be due to the intubation (breathing tube they had down her throat) during surgery. Small sips of water/ice chips will help will this...

Answer:

I was given breath mints! Kinda like altoids bt not as strong, that made my mouth water. I use them to when I get cotton mouth in the heat!
Answer:

Sugarless candies to suck on are the best (speaking not as PS professional but in my line of work - before kids - I worked with people on meds that caused dry mouth).

Sugar just makes you thirstier - sugarless is definately the way to go.

I saw something advertised - some sort of mouthwash that is suppose to relieve dry mouth??? Never tried it but if you are at the pharmacy or walmart or somewhere, may be worth looking for and trying?

If her throat hurts from being intubated (mine killed - second only to the MR) sucrets helped me (but, they have sugar I think so beware)....
Answer:

Yep, I had it bad too. I'm pretty sure it's from the anestesia.
Lots of water, it's not just her mouth that's gonna be dry. My whole body dried out. My feet were a mess. I couldn't wait for a pedicure!
Answer:

I remember being like that after each C-section but that was with an epidural not general. They still had a catheter in me for a day before taking it out and the nurses couldn't believe how often they had to empty the container the urine was going into - I was drinking that much But of course I worked hard in labour before have the C-section - that doesn't mean your body doesn't work hard going through the surgery and aftercare. My favourite drink is tea as that is the first thing one of the nurses brought when I came out of surgery, a wonderful hot cup of tea Now that's all I drink as after that surgery nothing tasted so good and quenched my thirst so well. It put me right off coffee so that I can't stand to even look at the stuff. Go figure.
