Drs. Is my scar ok? Am I just a slow healer?

Question:
Hi s...appreciate your professional opinion. I'm amazed at how my still looks. Very thick, red, lumpy, and still scabbed in some places. It's all solid underneath, no signs of necrosis says dr (back at week 4). Just some browning scabs remaining. No leaking, no pus, just very dry. Do you think this is normal at 8.5 weeks?

Also my cute BB appears to be closing!!!

Answer:

Hi Dana,
At 4 weeks my bb looks pretty much like yours, very red, although not painful. My has been leaking at the bottom middle, otherwise its healing well. I did start using the neosporin scar strips last week, and my scar is starting to flatten out nicely. Ive also been giving it a firm massage every night and have been getting the popping noise ive heard about on here, so i suppose im breaking down the scar tissue. Have you tried the strips? I think you look great by the way!

Answer:

Scabs at week 8 is not common in my practice except in thge smokers. Please tell me you have not been smoking post-op! I think you may have had a "mini" necrosis / slow healing in those few spots. What kind of wound care has your suggested? What have you been doing? I would let this all heal and then let it mature before doing anything, but I am curious as to what he has been doing to help you along and to what extent you have smoked in the past or present.
Answer:

The central part of the was for sure necrotic...the full thickness of the was probably lost in that small area where the old BB was.

Takes awhile to heal so that's the scabs.

I see Dr. D mentioned smoking. Nicotine is about the best drug I know of to create an ugly, non-healing wound followed by an unfavorable scar.
Answer:

Thanks s. My smoking history is this.... I have been smoking for the past 5 years. I am a very light smoker, if there is such a thing. I had maybe 2 or 3 a night. Prior to that I had quit for 9 years. I quit several weeks before the surgery, and no I'm not smoking now.

My doctor never said boo about my . Never mentioned necrosis or any problems. I went in about a week and a half ago and the scab was still on the center part. It has since fallen off. He never once showed concern. I have mixed emotions. He is a highly respected doctor with a great reputation. I did not see any pics of his prior patients though. I know big mistake on my part. My sister has worked in the OR with him for over 10 years and talked about how meticulous and skilled his is.

I'm not really doing much to it at this point. Just letting it dry up. I massage it daily, but not directly, over my . I'm still attached to it. I do put a thick non fragrance lotion on too.
Answer:

Gosh can I just say I feel sick to my stomach after reading the Drs. posts. I feel like I've done this to myself. What an awful feeling. I don't want to have a gross . I've been in this for 9 weeks. Do you think the lack of air contributes at all?? I haven't put a lot of lotion on because of the scabs. I thought it was best to let it heal on its own.

Dr just called back on my BB question. I told them it was disappearing. They said it was swelling and scar tissue and not to worry about it, they'll look at it in 5 weeks. They also told me I should be picking at these scabs and trying to get them off. I don't know what to believe and not to believe anymore.

I do feel like a surgical nightmare. I swear my body is defective. I've never had great luck with surgeries.
Answer:

No,no don't worry! "You" did NOT do this to yourself. I had scabs for quite a while (I can't remember how long) and I did NOT do anything to get them off. I thought if you pick at a scab it will leave a bigger . I would not do anything to the scar.

Now if you have the necrosis, that's another story. It does look like you have it. From reading on here the last 8 months I have read that some s do not say anything when it is a minor touch of it. I am not sure why a dr would not say when one of their patients have it whether or not it is just a little or not.

However, one of the dr.s on here can tell you what to do to help heal it and "this too shall pass"!!! I promise.

Dana, you have come so far. You are looking so good! Keep in mind that it is such a long road to recovery. Quite a few of us have some problem that goes on for a while ( nercrosis, swelling, dog ears, BB) WE WILL ALL HELP you get through this.

I know it is easier said than done, but please do not blame yourself!

Take care. Private message me anytime if you just need to vent or need some support. We are here for you!

Gip 1971............i really had to respond. I had major problems healing from my BL may 2005.............it took months. (maybe you have read my many posts) sorry if you have. Anywayz..........i had 2 BL and didnt heal well with both!!! Devestating!!!!!!!!!!! My PS said I DIDNT have nercosis. My insision broke open (quater size). Resulted in nasty s! Im planning a TT and i am scared to death the same thing will happen!!!!! I want this surgery more than anything. I DID QUIT smoking 2 months before surgery and this still happened to me! Sad thing is with my last BL i got scar revision done from my 1st BL and look what happened AGAIN!!! Yes i know we all take risks but really we think everything will go well and it doesnt always go well. Is your PS being helpful.........mine really hasnt been and cant answer me to why this happened........as he claims has never seen this before!! Im looking for 2nd and 3rd opinions before i go back to him. I have had 3 surgerie's from 3 different PS. Im suppose to go back in one year and that will be in May. Good luck to you and hope you find some answer's soon.
Answer:

Small areas of necrosis like this are more of a nuisance than a serious problem. They take a long time to heal, and as soon as I identify those spots, I tell the patiets to be "patient."

Fortunately, this is a rare problem in my practice, and I think I avoid it by not operating on active smokers.
Answer:

You are off the cigarettes now right? This and time tend to help the healing. You are early. It should improve with time as long as you stay clear of the "cancer sticks."

I have also been putting patients with problems on oil as it has an essential fatty acid in it. Get the pills as it tastes terrible. It will not hurt and may help.
