Anyone COMPLETELY cut out salt? Did it help with swelling?

Question:
I've been on a salt-free diet for a little over a week now. I'm pleasantly surprised what a difference it's made. I've always been so prone to water weight and bloating. Since going salt-free I'm not having any water retention problems. I plan to carry on like this thru my healing (my surgery is Thursday (22nd). Has anyone else out there utterly and completely cut out salt and do you think it helped keep the swelling down?
Answer:

Our family has never been a big salt consumer, but now that I have had my surgery, I read the labels for sodium content. We don't even own a salt shaker!! I'm not sure if it is working, but I do swell when I walk around the house alot.

I love salt and have not even tried to cut back, let alone eliminate it from my diet. I know,,, bad, bad, bad... At almost eight weeks out, I still have a bit of swelling giving me a touch of the Ken-Doll look. Ridding of it a little soomer is not worth putting away my Fritos over. I envy those who can put the salt shaker away and barely think twice about it!
Answer:

Hi! I am just over 3 weeks post op and I also experienced ALOT of swelling. I kept reading over and over about salty diets, perservatives, and sodium effecting how much you swell. So, I decided to try a diet cutting out salt/sodium, and perservatives. I am only on day 3 of this diet transformation and I cant even begin to explain how much better I feel. For breakfast I have a large organic fruit salad using all different kinds of fruits, for lunch I have canned organic low sodium vegtable soup(like country vegtable or minestrone), it would probably be even better to make it from scratch with fresh veggies but who has the time. I have a fruit soy yogurt cup for snack. Then for dinner, plain baked boneless less chicken breast seasoned with no salt type seasonings and all the steamed and salt free veggies I want. I also make sure I down one of the biggest bottled water a day. Some may say Im advocating and I swear Im not. Im a sausage and cheeseburger kind of girl! I began noticing a change instantly in the swelling of my stomache. I can finally stand up and stretch my hands above my head and it doesnt bother me a bit. I still have minor swelling from time to time, but its nothing compared to the swell hell I was experiencing before the diet change. Again, I know results are different from person to person, but with this drastic change in how I feel, I wanted to let you know so maybe it could help. Good luck.

I have not been a huge salt-fanatic, but I also admit to not looking closely at labels. Sounds like something I should try even though at still a month away from my surgery. I want to do what I can to help with the PO swelling. Thanks for the information!
Answer:

That's great it has worked so well for you. Guess the rumors are true. I'm not a big salt fanatic. I almost never salt cooked food and only occassionally use a little while cooking. I pray my swelling isn't too bad!!

Kellster,

How are you doing? I thought I was ok until today. I feel kind of jittery and nervous. How in the world I am going to get through the next few days??! Yikes! Are you calm or about the same?
Answer:

I cut out salt as well as soda and my swelling has gone down each week since my sx. I have not (knock on wood) experienced the swell hell as of yet. I did go out to eat for chinese but I had tea, lots of veggies, sushi and stayed away from the sauces. So far so good. I also take several s and minerals and really push water w/ lemon.
