i have had piercings in many differet parts of my body and i have never had a problem. You have to be educated and take care of them, clean them and what not. As with everything you do there are risks, there are risks when you drive your car or walk across the street, it is all about being careful and responsible. As far as people getting pierced to be "cool" I dont believe that all, It is a form of expression and I personally like the way it looks

The guy who pierce my belly buttn told me that you have two major veins in your tongue, if you pierce either one of them you will bleed to death. Too close to the front will give you a speech impediment! You can do it, but you should be really careful. Just make sure you know where you are going and watch them clean their tools!!

I had my tongue pierced for about a year and a half. It never got infected because I took proper care of it (including taking a prescription antiboitic that my doctor gave me when I asked him about the piercing BEFORE I got it done). You just need to research who is doing it, make sure they clean their equipment properly, and don't go doing it uneducated.
