Tonsillectomy In The UK

Question:
Hey All,

I'm checking in from South-East England - hope you dont mind .

I'm 22 and I'm having a tonsillectomy a week on Tuesday. I had a lump on my neck which I was referred to an ENT for & it turned out to be some infected glands - the pain was horrible & I had to stay off work until it went away, it leaked fluid & was bright red! I'd had two bouts of tonsillitus earlier in the year, which I hadnt had before & after plenty of blood tests, scans/x-rays and discussions with the ENT he is taking them out for me. He says that my tonsils are enlarged, more so on the side where the lump was and I have trouble swallowing easily. All the time my tonsils are the way they are the lump could return. I'm now getting a daily episode of loosing my voice and non stop coughing aswell as I work in a busy office and receive/make in total around 80 phone calls a day, which arent nice and simple - they often include a lot of discussion.

So, there's my story! I'm feeling very nervous about what is to come which is why I am reading up on recovery at the moment. I'll be having my Mum look after me whilst my Dad is at work and my Partner will be away - which is something that we cant avoid.

Wish me luck!
Answer:

The recovery isn't fun...but don't let everything you read online scare you! You'll be fine...and you'll feel much better after it's all said and done with! After everything I read online and everything other people told me about the reovery, I just knew I was in for the most horrible thing ever. Now, it wasn't very nice, but it wasn't that bad. And it doesn't last forever. If you can make it through the first few days, you'll be just fine! Just make sure you have someone with you at all times...and eat with your pain medicine. Even if it's just applesauce or pudding or some soft easy swallowed food. Just get lots of rest, stay hydrated, and don't miss any doses of pain meds. You'll learn how often you need them because you'll be able to tell when they start wearing off....my dosage directions were 2 - 4 teaspoons every 4 - 6 hours, but I took 2 teaspoons every three hours. For some reason, after the third hour, I could feel some pain coming...so that worked better for me. And I only had to take the pain meds about six days.

Goodluck with things...and keep us informed on how you're doing! Take care!

IceBlueYaris,

Welcome. Good luck on your procedure and recovery. I had three episodes of bleeding.. which is highly unusual, but I would do it again and again. My quality of life has improved dramatically, as has my son's. In addition to other comments.. constant fluid intake is important and helps manage the pain greatly. The scabs and throat hurts the worse when it is dry. Constant application of nasal saline solution and around 100+ ounces of water a day, managed most of my pain until the swelling began to affect me ears.

Respectfully Yours,

Hi,
I'm in Manchester, had coblation tonsillectomy 2 days ago( 8 jan). Was able to eat a sandwich half an hour after coming round from anaesthetic, then managed some salmon later on, even toast for breakfast. Not as good today at all, but think that's from being asleep and having no painkillers, so am filed up with them now, weetabix are good for breakfast, and now I am back in bed watching daytime tv with a bag of haribo starmix( nurse recommended these!). Am drinking loads of water which helps, and generally it feels beter once I have eaten something, but you have to work through the eating pain first! Generally it's not half as bad as I thought after reading the stuff on here, but I guess there is time yet ......

and i forgot to add that it sound like we do similar jobs, I do about 80 phone calls a day too, in dry air conditioned office full of germs. Had croaky voice every morning, always sore throat and had to drink water constantly at work, and then get in trouble for taking too many toilet breaks!!!!!!
