tonsillectomy and pain meds

Question:
Tonsillectomy on March 1st---How do you swallow the pain pills???? My doctor does not prescribe liquid meds, he says they burn the wound. Is this correct?
Answer:

My doctor insisted that he only prescribes liquid pain meds because it's virtually impossible to swallow a pill when you are in that much pain.

I would insist on liquid pain meds. He's not helping you at all by refusing to give you liquid. Just insist on it. And if he doesn't do it, then go to your regular doctor and get some.
Answer:

I agree...only liquid pain meds and antibiotics. There was NO WAY I could have swallowed a pill of any kind, much less a huge pain pill. The liquid pain med does burn a little going down, but it does not affect the surgery site in any way. I would not leave the hospital without a script for liquid hydrocodone. Good luck!!
Answer:

I concur.. the liquid pain meds drove me to drink water afterward.. but they were the only thing I could take for 10 days. On day 10, I was able to take the smallest pills orally. It wasn't until day 12 that I could actually get back on my routine medications.

FOR ALL YOU WOMEN OUT THERE:
After the fact my OB-Gyn in-law mentioned that females can take non-coated or non-capsulated medication vaginally. This includes most BC pills, some naseau medication, and some anti-biotics.

So ladies if your ENT refuses to give you anything liquid ask him up front if you can take the prescribed pain medication vaginally and see what he says. If he says, no. Then tell him it is your choice to deal with the added irritation of liquid medication or to prescribe something else that can be taken with out swallowing. Ultimately it is your choice.

Respectfully Yours,
MG
Answer:

I agree on the liquid pain meds for the tonsillectomy. However, I have a question for you all. My doc prescribed steroids from the beginning and since I've heard they help so much with swelling, I really have to take them. I tried crushing one up this morning, but it tasted so bitter I couldn't eat the baby food I put it in. This afternoon I swallowed a pill, but it did get stuck back there and had me gagging. Any advice on pills you "have" to take? The nurse suggested something really sweet to cut the bitterness of the steroids. I might try that tomorrow and/or tonight for the Celebrex. Any ideas would be appreciated!
