borderline sweat test? - Page 3

Question:
Hi everyone. My son had his second sweat test today. Actually, they did two. It was done a bit different than the first one. The first time they used something that looked like a watch with a spiral in it. When the spiral turned blue, then enough sweat was collected. That was when his reading was a 37.

This time it was done by a more experienced tech. She's the only one here that does them. She induced the sweat and then carefully placed a circle of paper on his arm and wrapped it with tape. She did it on the second arm as well. so what exactly is the difference between these two tests?

My son did very well and didn't fight it once. We should be getting results back this afternoon or hopefully tomorrow. I will keep you all posted. I am just praying that it is not CF and that his original diagnosis of Celiac disease is correct. Talk to ya later.

Answer:

Hi Rhyanen, Good to hear that your son did well through both sweat tests. I am unfamiliar with that disc type test you mentioned. Both my daughters have only had the second one you mentioned done. That other one must be a new way of collecting. Hmmm.

Anyway... I hope you have good results and that your son doesn't have CF. Keep us posted.

Answer:

Hi everyone. We did get the results and it is NOT CF, thank God. His tests came out as 8.4 on one arm and 11 on the other. I haven't looked at his results, but the doctor's office said that 30-40 or higher is CF. I am not sure what lab values they are using?, so I'm curious and will have to pick up the test results myself.

I am still in the dark about his frequent fevers and upper resp infections though. He still has other tests pending, like immunodeficiency, etc.

Thank you all for your support here and I wish you all the best of luck and good health. Susan, I hope you will find some answers soon.

Hi Rhyanen i'm glad to know it's not cf! I never saw your post b/c we were away or getting ready to go away.Do you know anymore about your son? it's so hard not knowing-sometimes I think it's harder than knowing.
In terms of Jeffrey, he's hanging in. For the second time in his life, he's too thin and underweight. jeffrey lost a lot of weight from his 8/4 tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy and hasn't regained it. He seems taller though. We go to his cf dr in a week. In the meantime, the same old, same old. We're still waiting for a 2nd opinion (from a new gi dr) referred by his cf dr. However, his cf dr. who previously thought jeffrey didn't have it, is now not so sure-it's going the wrong way. Take care and let me know how you guys are doing.

Susan,

Did your son ever get tested for Celiac disease? They should definitely rule that out before they give him a CF diagnosis, as the two can look very similar clinically. As a matter of fact,I have been doing some researching the past few months and have read on a few websites about other causes of borderline to positive sweat tests, and Celiac was one of them. I guess that if probably why my son's first sweat test was a 37 at the time of his Celiac diagnosis last year.

You could ask the new GI to run a celiac panel to rule it out. Just make sure they run all 4 tests. If you have further questions, let me know and I'll post what exact tests need to be run. They are just simple blood tests. It couldn't hurt.

What kind of symptoms does you son have? Does he have any gastrointestinal symptoms like chronic diarrhea, fatigue, irritability, and maybe vomiting?

I hope you will be able to find some answers soon, poor little guy. I hope it is not CF.

Please let me know if you want more info and keep me posted. Take care!
