Question:
Hello all,
My 74 YO Dad has just been diagnosed with a T1C prostate cancer - PSA 5, Gleason 6. He wants to not only beat the disease, but keep his "hot" 74 year old girlfriend happy He wants to avoid evasive treatment at all costs. Anyone have any suggestions or other resources I could read up on?
Answer:
rmalloy,
Let's not "candy-coat" this. Your dad has a deadly disease. Trying natural methods can be a waste of time & money. A Gleason 6 indicates a moderately aggressive cancer, depending on the pathologist's skill. At his age he might be a candidate for watchful waiting or hormone therapy. Hormone therapy will effectively kill his love life. How many samples were taken in the biopsy? The more samples, the more accurate the diagnosis. Two out of 3 tumors were missed in my biopsy. DRE indicated nothing. He probably has a few years left if he does nothing. Death from bone metastisis is a very painful way to die!

Answer:
With these stats watchful waiting may be an option; he would need to have his PSA and DRE monitored periodically. When PSA approaches 10 it tends to indicate the need for treatment. Least invasive is external beam. Link:

"CONCLUSIONS: WW is an appropriate and common form of treatment in many men with prostate cancer and about half remain on WW at 5 years. Our analysis of national practice patterns identified demographic, clinical and PSA characteristics associated with men who continue with this modality. Conversely these factors may help determine which men (for example higher risk/PSA) ultimately receive active treatment despite initial treatment preference and allow investigation of the effects of these interventions on cancer outcomes and quality of life."

Answer:
Natural is better if possible. I take noni juice because my mom had breast cancer and it contains nitric oxide which has anti-tumour properties. Also, a lady i know (not well) her dad has prostrate cancer (he had not had any chemo or radiation) so I told her re: the above. He began taking it in theraputic doses the Sat before Xmas (about the 20/12/03). By mid Dec he was off his painkillersEnd Jan he had his bone marrow scan and blood test. When he went for his results, the Dr wanted to know what he had been taking, so they told him. His PSA had dropped from 1,100 to 100 and the cancer deposits (look like smarties on the scan) had totally disappeared from his upper legs and liver. So they told a friend of theirs with soft tissue cancer and her tumour on her lung shrunk by half (with chemo) and the consultant said he'd never seen anything like it.
